A Baby…

I grew it, one thought at a time.

I wove it, one word at a time.

I closed my eyes, pictured my reader, and spoke to him/her from my heart.

For hours at a time. Until I was done.

Then the baby just rested for a while… I went to check on it every so often, playing with its words and thoughts until I thought it was just right; beautiful in my eyes.

After that, I had lots  of help.  People read, and criticized, and praised, and questioned.  And I went back to the drawing board and worked some more.

And today, I birthed it…

My very first e-book.

My incessant search for purpose and meaning in all that I do was the driving force behind my new baby…  And you know how it is when you have a baby; you want the whole world to know.  So here it is, folks!

In this ebook, I help you figure out what your vision in life is. And one of my goals in this short life that I have to live is to help African adoptions in the US.  So some of the proceeds of this book is going to fund exactly that: African adoptions in the US.  How cool is that?

Such a simple question, isn’t it?  But not so easy to answer…

What do you want out of your life?

What makes you tick?  Is it making a difference, or having it all, or simply enjoying the moment?  If you get to look back at your life when the end comes, will you be please with what you see?

When we are clear on what we want, we don’t get stuck with the how… we just live on purpose!

Some people are just amazing thinkers.

Great thinkers invent, push forward, solve, mediate, write, make progress, change the world.

Great thinkers are passionate.

They stretch thoughts past what is known.

They take leaps with their brains.

Great thinkers think outside the box.

Great thinkers are bold.  They are visionaries.  And they are beautiful.

And I wonder… were they ever taught to think like that? Do their brains have a different chemical make-up?  Do they all have a higher IQ than the average person?

I think that great thinkers are great because they let themselves be.  They don’t put a fence around their brains.

They allow themselves to push the envelope.

 

They give themselves permission to venture past where it’s safe. They refuse to  judge their seemingly crazy thoughts and look beyond what is known.  They don’t belittle their impossible dreams.  They play with words, and thoughts, and ideas.

I wanna play.  May I?  Yes, Barbara, you may.

But the true question is: will I let fear interfere?

I believe that human beings crave balance and wellness from the inside out.

I believe that human being are balanced when their hearts are settled on basic, fundamental truths.  We need to know where we stand and what we are all about before we can effectively walk this road called life.  We perform at our best when we moved from questioning our reason for being.

I believe that you have to get through steps 1,2 and 3 before you can get to step 4.  And steps 1 through 3 have a lot to do with finding peace on the inside of who we are.  Wellness. It can’t happen by accident.  It has a lot to do with knowing truth and letting it define who we are.

Did you know that the word PEACE–shalom–really means “nothing missing, nothing broken?”

That’s wellness: Nothing missing, nothing broken.

May you enjoy peace today.

At times, there is a vast ocean in the spaces between me and me.  I cannot figure out where I begin and where I end.  What do I do with all the emptiness that I find in between?  What if I get lost within me?

There are places where my heart cannot go, battles too bloody for me, spaces where I suffocate.  There is a chasm that no one can cross; pain too deep to explain; hopelessness ready to burst.  And I think I will die.

But You come.

And everything changes.

You become strength for my heart, soundness for my mind.

You fill the empty spaces between me and me.

You are the breath that puts me back together.

You are the life that gives me breath.

The Road less traveled

It’s not easy out there, on the road less traveled.

I don’t get to walk in all the ruts made by the footprints of the many, many people who have gone before me, because they haven’t. The brush is thick.  Each step is laborious.

And my footing is somewhat unsteady.

And I get nervous, or even really scared sometimes.

And I get lonely more often than I want to admit, because there aren’t many other ones on this road with me…

Yet with every fiber of my being, I’d rather be there than coasting anywhere else.

Coasting strips life away from me.

And to tell you the truth, it’s my experience that life really happens on the road less traveled.  Inventions are made.  Wild thoughts turn into books, and movements and revolutions that turn the status quo upside down. And more often than not, it’s on the road less traveled that breathtaking beauty is revealed.  And I don’t want to miss it.

As a noun, worth means “excellence of character or quality, usefulness or importance, value.”

So, for example, my house could be of great worth, or of little worth.  Your cheerfulness is of fantastic worth and his car is of negligent worth.

I find it remarkable that the worth of something is relative to its owner; it is never pre-designed.  Even if we talk about money– ten dollars is always “worth ten dollars,” yet ten dollars might equate to a treasure for Bobby, and be mere change for others…

The worth we give something determines its value to us.

The worth we give someone determines his/her value to us.

So… how do you measure the worth that you attribute to something or someone? Let me just mention two right here:

Money,

and Time.

How much of your money are you willing to spend on people/values you say have worth in your life?  To be more specific (ouch!): how much of your money are you willing to spend on your friends, spouse, health, future, personal development, charity?

How much of your time are you willing to spend on people/values you say have worth to you?  TO be more specific or confronting: how much of your time are you willing to spend on your friends, spouse, health, future, personal development, charity?

The bottom line question is really: how much of yourself–who you are at your core–are you actually spending right now on people/values that you say have worth to you?

And that, my friend, can get pretty confronting…

Side-tracked… or slowly drifting.

Tiny movements, so small that I don’t really notice them; until there is a chasm between where I am and where I ought to be.

I must come back to the reality of what I am all about.

But how?

By remembering…

I will remember what makes my heart sing.  I will choose to go back there, whatever the cost.

I will remember that it’s not all about me.  I will stir up within me the purpose of God for my life.

I will remember to be thankful.  I will open my eyes to all that I have been given.

It’s time to go back to basics.

It’s that time of year, you know… January.  The gyms are full, every one is working out, looking to lose a few pounds–the ones that crept up through the years and the new ones just obtained in the last couple of weeks of unhealthy eating.

WEIGHT… has such an ugly connotation for many of us!

Yet today, I will ask you to stretch your mind a bit; can you think outside the box?

What do you have to say about the WEIGHT of your investment in those you love?  

What about the WEIGHT of your kindness?

And the WEIGHT of your involvement in the life of those less fortunate?

And the WEIGHT of your compassion?

What about the WEIGHT that your job well done carries?

In many, many ways, I want to get a lot heavier!
