The lesson of the deerhunter

A friend of mine made a very good point this week. If you want to hunt deer, you have to follow certain rules. You go into their territory, and you have to follow their rules. You are on their turf. If you want to see them, you have to start by being quiet, make yourself almost invisible, unsmellable, just a part of nature. The deer isn’t going to come out if you smoke, chew gum, play loud music… that’s just not how it works.
So many things in life don’t work if you don’t play by the rules. So many things in life don’t come quick and easy, they require work, commitment and doing what you know you ought to do. You don’t go to a business meeting dressed like a bum and expect to be taken seriously. You don’t go to a restaurant without money and expect to be served. You don’t go before God like He’s just another guy hanging around. Following the rules is healthy most of the times.
There is still such a thing as right and wrong in this world, and playing by the rules is still necessary most of the times. I like that.
God declared long time ago that His word never changes, and that it will do what He intended it to do. It is timeless, it is THE rule that will never change. I can bank my life on it. And I have.
He made the rules up. We better listen if we want to enjoy the ride.
