November Letter–Dear Pumpkins

November 2013 Letter-Dear Pumpkins,

Oh, how I love you! Is it because of what you are, or because you are associated with everything lovely that is in the fall? I love the crisp air, the breathtaking leaves on the trees, the cool nights and the warmth of the days, the bounty of harvest, the warm colors of fall, the first fire in the fireplace, the smell of wet wood, the sweaters and jeans and sitting at home with a good book and a cup of tea.

Or is it just because you taste so amazing? I can hardly wait for pumpkin ice cream in the fall, let alone pumpkin muffins, pumpkin soup, pumpkin gobs, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cake, pumpkin bread, pumpkin cheesecake…

Or is it simply because you are my favorite color?

As soon as you appear in late September, you stir in me memories of joy, laughter and happiness.  Do you remember when my kids and I scooped all the seeds out of you, salted and dried them, then ate them throughout the winter? And the pumpkin carving contest, remember that? And how we always were so careful in choosing you and how much fun it was to bring you home and decorate the house with you?

The children are long gone, but I still put you in my yard as an announcement of the new season. I bake with you, getting ready for an evening of fall fun with friends. I even buy a few candles with your scent to keep you all through my house. I have been known to stock up on you through the holiday season so I can enjoy you later on in the year.

But you taste the best, smell the best and look the best right about now.

There’s nothing deep or meaningful about you. You just are! But how thankful I am that God made you; you make me smile, and you make my taste buds oh, so happy!  You are a reminder to me to enjoy the now. Right now. Me and my pumpkin.

Thanks for all you are to me,

Barbara

  1. I tasted that bread, admired the color (a favorite of mine!), saw the leaves floating in the ground. My favorite season. My friend’s little boy was riding in the car and his mother heard him, “Naked, half naked, naked, naked, half naked.) She scolded him then he told her, “I’m just watching the trees. Some don’t have any of their leaves and some still have some.” Had to laugh at his obvious enjoyment of fall, too!

  2. Your post made me want to go bake a pumkin pie. I love the smell of pumkin baking whether it bread, pie, cookies, soup, its a relaxing smell. Since I don’t look well in orange I will leave the color for you to wear. Good post. Blessings.

  3. Thank you for sharing your beautiful pumpkin delight with us at Tell me a Story. I believe pumpkin pie is my favorite, with a dash of ice cream on top, or a dallop of whipped cream. And Pumpkin nut bread is good any time of day!
