Seagull Breakfast

It’s early in the morning, and the Maine November sunrise is full of glory. I crack the window open, wrap a quilt around my knees, my hands around my hot coffee, and I just sit, mesmerized by the tide receding so slowly that I hardly notice the shift, so fast that the landscape changes with every blink.

And the seagulls, they are enjoying their God-given breakfast.

I follow one of them with my eyes. He soars, then abruptly dives into the water, then rises high up again with something in its beak. He rises up once more and drops his catch right on the rock to my right.

And the shell breaks. The seagull dives to the rock and simply eats his clam. The seagull rises high up in the sky once more and does it again. And again. And again.

And the sky, it  turns to blue and the day starts its glorious journey, but I sit here all wrapped up, and I can’t help but marvel at the One who made it all. .

And my heart swells with the joy of knowing that this King of mine, the Creator of life, He does all things well, even down to depositing knowledge and instinct in the seagull so that the seagull would not get frustrated about his daily food.

And I sit here all wrapped up and my coffee is all cold now, and the sky turned to blue and the day is well on its way, and I stare all my doubt and fear and nervousness right in the face and tell them about the seagull and God’s perfect provision.

It is well with my soul.
