I believe in the value of the little things. There are no big things apart from little things, one after the other. That’s really how life goes.
Little things get unnoticed. They can be so small that they don’t really seem to matter.
Like when you are trying to lose weight. Eating a candy bar or not eating a candy bar really does not make much of a difference in the grand scheme of things, right? There isn’t any immediate consequence of choosing poorly what goes in your tummy one day. You won’t notice a difference in your belt tomorrow, and life just goes on. But there is a lot to be said about the cumulative effect of eating a candy bar every single day. It still is just a little thing each time, right? But it adds up over a long period of time; it becomes a pattern and the belt will not fit any more.
On the positive side, let’s talk about exercising your mind. Two minutes of memorization a day really do not make a difference. What’s two minutes, right? There really isn’t any measurable gain if we keep score on each individual installment of time. Yet two minutes of memorization every day over a period of time add up to significant progress.
Little things, small amounts of time, all so unnoticed and seemingly useless… that is truly what the sum of our lives is. We live life in moments, in daily minute choices, and these choices make up the canvas on which we design our lives.
The Slight Edge, by Jeff Olson is a book that affected me greatly when I read it a few years back. It is not a motivational, self-help book, but rather an explanation of such a basic life principle that governs much of how we function. Jeff talks about small tasks that are easy to do, and easy not to do, and how in the end, the smallest increments of disciplined actions can add up to massive success. He tells the tale of a man who gives his son the choice of inheriting one million dollars or one penny which will be doubled every day for a period of 30 days. Do the math, you will be astounded.
Our lives are made up of little things. That’s how God set it up. And He knows best.
