At Home

“There’s no place like Home.”

Five words backed up by the power of life lived behind the doors of each house; five words that stir feelings and memories in the hearts; five words that we all attach a different meaning to, yet clearly know what it means.

There is indeed no place life home. That’s where the masks should fall, where the real person should be comfortable and accepted. That’s where the silences between the sentences should not be heavy with meaning, where we can be transparent like nowhere else because there is an unspoken understanding of trust and acceptance.

Sometimes, we invite people into our homes whose hearts are close to ours. We tell them to make themselves at home in our home. We all know what we mean. Be real, be yourself, don’t tip-toe around me, go ahead and open the refrigerator and feel free to partake of what you see.

Home is where we ought to be safe.

I love my beautiful home. I have loved to make it a haven, a safe haven for family and friends. I purposefully make it cozy and open, not too fancy so that no one feels they have to be careful with the furniture or rings on the table, not too messy so that no one feels uncomfortable in a chaotic environment, just real. Just open in every way I know how.

But over the may years of my life, as much as I love my home, I have discovered that my home isn’t all there is about my home. Life’s ups and downs have led me to understand that my true home is in my God. He Himself has become my home, my haven, my anchor. The place where all masks disappear, the place where I am fully accepted and love.

And my home, it is with me wherever I go. It is well with me.

  1. We purchased our first home a year ago and I’ve enjoyed every moment of it. I’m not very good with decor or upkeep, but we have created our home as a safe haven for our family and for others. Really great post!

  2. How true this is, especially in this materialistic age..glorifying houses have too often replaced God! God is our home, when we seek first the kingdom, all else will be given! Beautiful reminder! Visiting today from #raralinkup!

  3. Amen. We will travel to be with relatives in fragile health and we will bring “home” with us. Have a blessed Christmas season. I’m your neighbor at Word of God Speak.

  4. It is always so good to arrive home after a trip or visit. One of these days we shall arrive at our heavenly home, where Jesus has out stretched arms. Your home on earth sound so very lovely and a gathering place that welcomes family and friends, Thank you for sharing with us here at Tell me a Story.

I would love to hear your reaction to this post.
