Dear Jesus with Skin on,
The other day, you took me in your arms and gave me one of those bear hugs that make all ugliness disappear. It was strong and soft and rough and tender and full of grace all at once. And as I walked away, I became aware that I had just been touched by Jesus. And the rest of my day, it was marked by the scent of that hug–it lingered deep within my soul. It let me know that everything was going to be all right.
My friend June used to call you “Jesus with skin on.”
You are that person sent by God to let me know that I am not alone. You are that one who smiled at me in the grocery store when I was so weary. You are that one with a word seasoned with grace when my world was crumbling.
You are Jesus with skin on, wondering the world, touching the unlovable, laughing with the joyful ones, holding on to those who want to let go. You are Jesus with skin on, teaching by example, leading by example.
Your fragrance is Jesus’. Your eyes, they understand. They speak truth without crushing. And your heart, it reaches out.
Dear Jesus with Skin on, there are times when I don’t even always know your name. But I thank you for all you are to me.
