There seems to be lots of articles about “What I know now and wish I knew before I got married,” “before I had kids,” “before my mom died,” etc… out there, filled with loads of wisdom after the facts. Hind-sight is wonderful, isn’t it?

But I keep wondering why is it that we don’t know before? It certainly is not that the information isn’t there–with the internet, we actually live in a world overloaded with available information. It’s not because we weren’t told– we all remember later on how someone had told us this or that… so, what is it? Did we not listen? Did we think we knew it all? Were we too proud to take a hold of knowledge passed down to us? Did we think it did not apply to us?

We people are a funny bunch. In a weird way, it seems that we all need to personally navigate obstacles. Lessons learned are internalized. They hit home.

I know this to be true. However, this makes me wonder: what’s the point of wisdom experienced and passed down to the next generation if the next generation cannot benefit from it, does not take it to heart, or needs to make its own mistakes?

God speaks about the value of wisdom, how we ought to seek it as gold, treasure it as more valuable than gold, love it. He does not say that we have to personally navigate things to learn. But He gets that we learn from experience; He created us this way–thus the parables, because we can so relate to them.

I couldn’t quite wrap my head around this one yet…until I asked for wisdom! Lesson learned! Wisdom can keep us from stumbling, can lead us in the right way, can give us valuable insight. And experience proves the wisdom to be what God intended it to be.

These are just the two sides of the coin, that is all.
