She caught my heart quite unexpectedly.
An adorable little girl with an unusual name, Leighton entered my home last week carried by her aunt.
Leighton can’t walk, and I hate that I can’t add a “YET” at the end of this sentence.
She fusses a bit, then nestles herself right in the safest place on earth, the arms of her gorgeous Momma, eyes wide open behind cute pink glasses, the semblance of a smile on her delicate lips.
What are you thinking, Leighton? But I will never know, because she can’t tell me. And I hate that I can’t add a “YET” at the end of this sentence.
At the end of each month, Leighton can do less than the month before. At the end of each month, there are less days left to enjoy her sweet, sweet presence on earth.
But life seems to be going on like normal everywhere else.
And her gorgeous Momma, she astounds me.
She changes Leighton’s diaper and tells me about stomach and muscle issues because Leighton can’t really straighten herself up all the way. She smiles. Tired smile, but oh so real.
And her Momma, she is one of these very rare women who have learned the value of the moment. Never taking anything for granted, she delights in her Leighton, like looking at a beautiful sunset. It isn’t going to last very long, but for now, it is simply captivating. Gorgeous. Worth it. And her eyes are glued to the beauty of the instant.
And my eyes, they are glued to the power of this moment.
And the questions, they hover beneath the surface. But God has a way of strengthening the soul. And the pain, it is real, raw, indescribable. But the grace of God, it trumps all.
